IKN Regulation Promulgated: Protecting IPLC Rights in Indonesia’s New Capital
The Nusantara (IKN) project, Indonesia’s new capital, has just adopted a significant regulation designed to protect Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLC) and the environment. Promulgated on 27 September 2024, the Regulation outlines procedures for recognising, protecting, and advancing local wisdom in environmental protection and management.
ClientEarth’s Role
Working in collaboration with our local partner, HuMa, ClientEarth provided critical input during the drafting process alongside Dr. Safitri, the Deputy for Environment and Natural Resources for the IKN. Our continued support will focus on ensuring the regulation’s successful implementation, particularly in shaping how social forestry is incorporated within the IKN framework.
Why This Regulation Matters
The IKN Regulation sets a precedent for sustainable development in East Kalimantan, balancing the needs of forest protection, biodiversity conservation, and IPLC rights. It highlights the importance of strong governance in major development projects, ensuring that local communities are at the heart of environmental protection efforts.
ClientEarth remains committed to supporting the Nusantara Capital project as it develops policies aimed at reducing the environmental impact and safeguarding the rights of Indigenous Peoples.
