Handbook on BRI Stakeholder Engagement for Financial Institutions

China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is continuously developing to integrate green development concepts. Multiple guidelines, guidance, and opinions have been issued by Chinese authorities to support this development and provide regulatory stipulations for improved environmental and social risk management for financial institutions and developers engaged in the BRI.

Co-authored by the Fudan University, the Green Investment Principles for the Belt and Road Initiative (GIP), and ClientEarth, this Handbook aims to support Chinese financial institutions engaged in overseas project finance, especially in developing economies in the BRI, in understanding good practices of environmental information disclosure, including the preparation, process, and data to acquire from project developers, as well as public participation throughout the entire project lifecycle. As every financial institution has its specific risk profile and strategy, every financial institution will have to develop its processes based on both regulatory requirements and applicable best practices. This document aims to provide a solid overview of these practices, particularly in an international context applied to China’s ambition to build a green Belt and Road Initiative.
